A Backcountry camping experience suitable for the whole family! Do you want to experience the wilderness of British Columbia, without needing lots of previous experience or a high level of fitness? Maybe you want a trip that the kids will also enjoy. Then this is the trip for you!

You don't need to be an experienced hiker to be able to safely enjoy the pristine mountains and lakes of the Coastal Ranges. Let Outdoor Explore guide you and your family or friends to one of BCs beautiful glacial lakes, where you can unplug and unwind.

Relax on the shores of Cheakamus lake and dip your toes in the cool waters. Read a book in the peace and quiet of nature without the distractions of screens and social media. Take a dip with panoramic views of glaciers and snowcapped peaks.

Our hike follows the mighty Cheakamus river as it winds through impressive old growth forest. Giant Douglas Fir trees tower over the trail climbs steadily to a scenic campsite on the shore of Cheakamus lake.

Day 1: 5-7km. +150m

  • Meet your guide either at the trailhead, or at the pickup location if transport is booked
  • Introduction, waiver signing, safety talk, gear check and pack bags
  • Begin hike through impressive old growth forest
  • Stop to check out the Cheakamus river
  • Set up camp on the shores of Cheakamus lake
  • Optional afternoon hike further up the lake shore
  • Relax and enjoy nature

Day 2: 5-7km. +0m

  • Enjoy a lazy morning sipping coffee by the lake as the sun rises
  • Pack up camp
  • Hike back along the Cheakamus river
  • Optional side trip to a suspension bridge over Cheakamus river
  • Debrief with your guide

Itinerary Disclaimer
Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is adventure travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee that we will stick to this plan. Weather conditions and the health of participants can all contribute to changes. The trip leader/guide will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!


Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are included while on the trip.

Breakfasts consist of oatmeal or granola with mixed toppings and dried fruit, tea and coffee. Great for fueling a full day of adventures.

Lunch varies from day to day, but often consists of wraps or sandwiches with different fillings e.g. cheese, dried meat, falafel, hummus, veg, etc.

Dinners are provided by our partner Nomad Nutrition. These super tasty meals are light weight, full of wholesome ingredients, and packed with energy. Exactly what you need after an exciting day in the mountains.

We can cater to any dietary requirements. Please let us know if you have any food allergies or dietary requirements BEFORE your trip.


Tented accommodation (1 night) is included in the trip price. We use MSR Elixir tents, which are spacious, warm and comfortable. 1, 2, or 3 person options are available.

Please bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad (e.g. Thermarest). If you do not have either of these, please select the rental option when booking your trip or contact us to arrange a rental.

Carrying a pack

This trip requires you to carry a large multi-day backpack with you personal equipment (sleeping bag, clothes, rain gear, etc.) and some shared camping equipment (tent, food, cooking gear, etc.). Previous experience carrying a multi-day backpack is recommended.
