The Middle Earth Trek gets its name from the mountains along the route. This range is known as the Tolkien group, and includes a series of mountains named after Lord of the Rings characters. This part of British Columbia is perfect for multi-day backpacking trips with the majority of the time spent above the treeline, in a rugged, alpine landscape.
This area is remote and wild, situated right on the border between the Coast Range and the Interior Range, meaning the landscape is very varied from glacial and snow capped peaks, to rocky volcanic ridges. The route passes a number of crystal clear lakes with sandy beaches which are ideal for swimming.
This circuit is a ideal for those who have some backpacking experience and want to explore a new area or try some scrambling in the British Columbia mountains. The route is demanding and requires a good level of fitness. We will be carrying heavy packs over steep terrain to access some of the more interesting scrambling peaks. For more treks near this area, check out our other Sea to Sky Treks.
Please note: prices shown below are for public trips, meaning other guests may be on the same trip. This trip will only run once 3 or more guests are booked for the selected date.

Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is adventure travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee that we will stick to this plan. Weather conditions and the health of participants can all contribute to changes. The trip leader/guide will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset!
Camping accomodation is provided while on the trek (4 nights).
Our tents are supplied by MSR and are lightweight and weatherproof. They are very roomy to give you the most comfortable camping experience. We can provide either 1, 2 or 3 man options, depending on the number of people in your group.
Please bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad/Thermarest. If you are unable to bring your own, please contact us and we can arrange a rental.
The majority of this trip is off trail, deep in the wilderness (how we like it). The route changes throughout the year depending on the amount of snow, so don’t be surprised if there’s a bit back-and-forth to find the best route. Our guides are well trained in navigation and route finding, and are very knowledgeable about this area.
You will be carrying a pack with your camping equipment, clothing, food, etc. For this reason, you must be comfortable with carrying a moderately heavy load for multiple days. This is mountainous terrain so expect to climb a lot of elevation, and move across loose or rocky ground.
Snow is common well into the summer in the BC mountains. There is a good chance we will be walking on patches of snow well into August. Please bring waterproof hiking boots with good grip to deal with any terrain and conditions.
